A team of student researchers from the University of Saskatchewan was nationally recognized for their contributions to automotive advanced technology. The team was awarded first place in the AUTO21 Highly Qualified People (HQP) Poster Competition, sponsored by the Ontario Ministry of Economic Development and Trade. The competition is open to student researchers within the AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence program.

Ontario researchers with the AUTO21 Network of Centres of Excellence will soon be gathering critical technical data for the new Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid vehicle (PHV). Toyota recently unveiled the plug-in version of the Prius hybrid and is engaging in global trials to assess its performance in a variety of driving and climate conditions. AUTO21 is one of two Ontario partner organizations in the global testing.

A smart camera technology that can help increase a factory’s efficiency helped a University of Windsor student win a national automotive research competition. Siddhant Ahuja, a PhD student, won the AUTO21 TestDRIVE competition, receiving a $10,000 scholarship for his work on indoor real-time location tracking systems.

Every year the American Society of Materials (ASM) Education Foundation runs student and teacher camps across North America to educate young people about materials science and engineering careers. This year, AUTO21 sent Karl Mikkelsen, an HQP working on the project Hybrid Active Safety Systems and Grid Interfacing from the University of Waterloo, to develop his leadership and communication skills and become an ASM master teacher.

Professional drivers spend long periods of time sitting in their vehicles, which puts them at up to two times greater risk for developing back pain than the general population. For police officers, the issue is compounded by the amount of equipment they wear at all times and the limited space within the vehicle seats. In Ontario alone, an average of approximately $22 million is spent in compensation claims for back injuries amongst police officers each year.
